Chewie gets some much needed attention in this third activity book from Random House. It's the usual blend of mazes, crosswords, magic tricks and recipes, all with a vague Wookiee slant.

I don't usually do obituaries for Star Wars folks or anybody else for that matter. Other people do them much better than me. Star Wars is a massive family that began 40 years ago so it's natural that we will lose people along the way and we have - Peter Cushing, Kenny Baker, Christopher Lee are just some the actors who come to mind and we've lost plenty of crew members too. Also, 2016 has been brutal, we all know that.

But this one hit me hard.

Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) has died. I was worried by her recent heart attack and, for a moment, thought she might pull through, but she's gone. I really wasn't prepared for losing one of the 'big three' (i.e. Luke, Han and Leia) so soon. I'm not going to go into the effect her death has on the upcoming movies other than to say that Episode IIX is more or less done which hopefully burdens only the concluding part of the new trilogy with her absence. That's all I'm going to say on the matter. They're movies. This is a person's life I'm talking about.

Princess Leia was always something of a double-edged sword for Carrie Fisher. Star Wars made her and yet, as with so many involved in the franchise, it dominated her life. I've seen her laugh it all off in interviews but you could always see that her smile was a little thin. While I like seeing her in other roles and wish there had been more of them, it was her off-screen personality that really made me like her. She was tough, cynical and very funny. I like to think that this was something she brought to the role of Leia and am grateful that she gave us such a powerful heroine in the late seventies - a time when popular culture really needed one. Star Wars gets a lot of flak for its female representation but I think it's easy to take that first movie for granted. Sure, Leia is a princess to be rescued but she proves to be just as tough as the boys in a fight, gives orders to rebel pilots and faces down slimy politicians into the bargain. For a light-hearted space romp made in 1977 I think this was really something.

Carrie embraced the character more in recent years, seemingly accepting her fate. She once joked that 'Princess Leia' will be on her gravestone, not 'Carrie Fisher'. I sincerely hope that won't be the case. However, it was a defining role in every sense of the word and, while I would have liked to have seen more of her in The Force Awakens, I was immensely grateful to have her back. Episode IX is going to be strange climax to the whole shebang without her.

This isn't much of an obituary. Find some others that cover her career in better detail and read those. The way I'm feeling right now, I just had to write something. I'm watching Rogue One tomorrow (for the first time). Knowing how it leads into the iconic opening of my favorite movie ever, It's going to be a bittersweet experience to say the least.
Apart from this.

Random House did several kids books based on Star Wars including four activity books and a couple of stories - The Maverick Moon and The Rebellious Robot. This one is in a different format (hardcover) but the style is more or less the same. Tying in with what we saw of the Wookiees in the Holiday Special, Chewbacca's son Lumpy, heads down to the lower levels of the forest (against his mother's warnings) to collect wasaka-berries. Chewbacca is returning home after a three-year mission with Han Solo and there is to be a big celebration for his bicentennial. This word is mentioned quite a lot throughout the book and the author was no doubt cashing in on the fresh memories of America's own bicentennial that was a big thing only a couple of years before this book was published. Needless to say, things don't go to plan and Lumpy finds himself lost and pursued by a series of frightening creatures on the forest floor.

Cue Han and Chewie! Now apparently adult Wookiees have the ability to think messages to each other (at least in this obscure book). This spiritual way of communication comes in handy right about now and Lumpy's mother (Malla) thinks a message to Chewie who is on board the Falcon. Arriving at Kashyyyk, Chewie takes the Falcon's 'explorer craft' down to the surface to look for his son. Take a look at that little craft exiting the Falcon!

Shaun Cassidy is the mug on the cover for this issue but there's no article on him, just a series of photographs. There is however, an article on the mechanical shark of the upcoming Jaws 2 which was pretty sweet. I like that movie. Not a patch on the original of course, but as far as sequels go it's not bad at all.
On to the Star Wars strip, and I've not really any clue as to what's going on story wise having not read the previous installments. Luke, Leia and the droids seem to be escaping from some high tech planet with the aid of 'the keeper'. I'm looking forward to getting all issues of this magazine and putting the strips into chronological order to make sense of them.

Here is series 2 of the stickers included in Topps trading card packs. Quite similar in style to series 1, they are mostly portraits with a couple of nice spaceship shots. Again, I have lost the border on one of them, leaving it white, but at least it's just one card this time.
Now isn't that just the coolest cover ever? Linda Rondstadt backed by Dr. Strange on lead guitar with Captain America on bass and C-3PO on drums. Linda Rondstadt was the cover story for this issue and boy was she hot stuff in the '70s. Widely regarded one of the top stars of the decade, she was regularly alluded to as 'The Queen of Rock' with sell-out shows and chart topping albums. This year she is seventy. Just let that sink in for a while.
No teen mag is complete without an 'agony aunt' column and some of the old ones can be pretty hilarious. In Pizzazz's case it's 'Write Wendy' who, when contacted by a kid who's two-timing a pair of girls actually tells him its the perfect set up and not to get caught! I have a feeling 'Wendy' isn't taking her duties all that seriously here. I also have a feeling this agony 'aunt' is actually and agony uncle.

Anyway, on to the Star Wars strip. Luke and Leia have found some sort of Mayan style temple and the Empire is hot on their heels. In true Scooby-Doo fashion, Threepio inadvertently gets them out of the scrape.
A few choice advertisements here, including one for Peter Pan book and records for such decade stalwarts as Kojak and the Six Million Dollar Man.
Well, it's been over a year since I blogged last - apologies to anybody keeping tabs on this site. Life has been hectic with kids, work etc (usual excuses). I have a little more time now and have a few posts lined up so I'll kick off with the first of Topps's sticker sets. Each wax-sealed pack of trading cards contained a sticker and there were eleven stickers for each series.

Series 1 was more or less a collection of character mugshots against a starry backdrop with the occasional spaceship. You can see in the photo above that some of the backgrounds are white. This means, unfortunately, that I have lost the background/border as it has peeled off which is a shame. I may try to get replacements for these cards.
Starlog really is one of my favorite magazines from this era. It's not just the Star Wars stuff, but this issue alone spotlights a ton of other stuff I like such as Battlestar Galactica, Roger Corman and Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings animation. Not many magazines are such a joy to read from cover to cover.

This cover really has gone down in history as it's one of the few pieces of memorabilia connected to the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. The dreaded show went out a month previous to this and the article doesn't give much away regarding public reception. It's really more of a set of stills with captions rather than an in depth look at the making of the show and other than a vague reference to 'creative differences', it doesn't say much about what must have been a fascinating production.
We have 'movie facts' now instead of official descriptions and I like the one showing Lucas's influences like Flash Gordon and John Carter of Mars. I have to feel like they were groping a bit for new images to use on the card fronts. 'Luke's secret yen for action' made me laugh. Also cool; 'The Empire Strikes Back' way before there was a movie by that name.

This celebrates the return of the franchise to Marvel after several decades with Dark Horse. This just looks awesome...
The second of Daley's Han Solo trilogy, this was published on Oct. 12 1979. This is the hardcover book club edition from that year.

Again, there is no Empire as the villains and the lack of Stormtroopers and TIE Fighters makes it all seem a bit 'un-Star Wars'. It opens with Han and Chewie hiding out on the planet Kamar and working some sort of sideshow racket; showing 'holodocumentaries' to the primitive natives. When that business venture goes awry they take on a job for a shady employer to ship an unknown cargo. That cargo turns out to be slaves and, not wanting any part of that, our heroes find themselves in a sticky situation as the slavers try to take command of the Falcon.

Intervention on the parts of the Falcon's resident droids Blue Max and Bollux (yes, you read that right) enable Han and Chewie to defeat the slavers and make for the Planet Bonadan where their treacherous employers intended to meet their contact for payment. Han is up for revenge as the title suggests and along the way he gets caught up with a Corporate Sector Authority agent called Fiolla who is trying to break the slaving ring and Chewie has his paws full with a rodent-like debt collector trying to repossess the Falcon.
I'm continued to be surprised by the contributions Daley made to the Star Wars EU. In the previous novel I found out that Daley gave us Z95-Headhunters, vibroblades and Holocubes. In Han Solo's Revenge there is a thrilling 'swoop bike' chase. Different from the speeder bikes in Return of the Jedi, swoop bikes are more souped up and are essentially an engine with a seat. They crop up all over the place in the EU and off the top of my head I can remember a similar chase in Shadows of the Empire.

A collector in England had one of those mail-away Kenner figures from the '80s which he bought for about £5. But it had never been opened. These figures were claimed by sending off the tokens from the cardbacks and were delivered in plain white cardbord boxes so it was impossible to know which figure was inside. Hoping that it may have been a rocket-firing Boba Fett (I don't think any of those were actually dispatched, but anyway...) the collector had the box x-rayed by Nottingham University which also produced a 3D scan of the figure. It turned out to be Emperor Palpatine but nevermind. Personally I just think it's cool to see an x-ray of a Kenner figure!
Aside from the trading cards and bubblegum packs Topps did in the late seventies, they also sold single bubblegum sticks wrapped in foil with a paper wraparound displaying four different characters. They supposedly enclosed a 'movie poster pin up' although I've never seen what one looks like and they must be minuscule 'posters'. It feels a little weird collecting 36 year old bubblegum, but they look pretty cool in the display cabinet.Chris Thorndycrofthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12222413743438238164noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743802711337207506.post-78210129242139002122014-06-01T10:39:00.001+02:002014-10-16T16:17:40.781+02:00Kenner 3-31/4 " Action Figures - The Wild Cards

Well, I've finally done it. I've collected every figure from Kenner's Star Wars run, that is, both the '78 and the '79 line. Here's the Class of '79 above. It's a much more colorful line up than the whites, blacks and greys of the original twelve. It's mostly robots and aliens, being mainly background characters as the main dudes were all done in the previous line. In fact the only ones with 'proper names' are the final three I got hold of which are featured in this post.

You had to have someone to fly it! That doesn't explain why a TIE Fighter figure wasn't released until the Empire Strikes Back line though. This figure's a pretty colorful one with his orange jumpsuit and the helmet is neat (but not removable). The red rebel insignias are pretty tricky to find un-rubbed off.

Greedo is more than just a 'cantina alien' in that he had a proper name, a speaking part and he even took a shot at Han Solo (or did he? Let's not get into that...). His lime green jumpsuit is a clashing complement to Luke's orange and doesn't really reflect his 'bodywarmer' getup in the movie. Nice detail on the head sculpt though.

The mysterious bounty hunter from the Empire Strikes Back in a 1979 toy line from the first movie? As most of you are no doubt aware, Boba Fett made his first appearance in the hilariously bad Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. Toted as a major bad guy in the upcoming sequel, Kenner joined in the hype by releasing this figure in both their 3-31/4" and 12" lines in 1979. The big whoop about the smaller version was that it was a mail-away special and was going to have a 'rocket-firing' feature. Unfortunately due to a lawsuit resulting from a tragic mishap with a similar feature on the Battlestar Galactica toys, the plan was scrapped and the Boba Fett figures were sent out with their rockets glued firmly in place.

Well, I finally tracked down the original 6 issues of Marvel's Star Wars comic for bearable prices. Issues #1 - #6 was the adaptation of the movie and began in April 1977 (Marvel cover dates at this time were generally 3 months ahead explaining the 'July' on #1). There's some pretty crazy/loosely inspired cover art on show here. My favorite is #5 where the Death Star is attacking what is presumably Yavin IV and is depicted as a hovering ball thing emitting laser blasts as if it is no bigger than your average flying saucer.

I won't go through the whole plot here as I assume most of you reading this are familiar with this particular story arc (wink) but as the adaptation was based on the original script rather than the movie itself there are the occasional interesting inconsistencies which are worth taking a look at.

The major difference is the inclusion of the 'Biggs Darklighter' scene on Tatooine which was cut from the movie.

The second 'deleted' scene is, of course, the one with Jabba the Hutt. Here he is portrayed as some sort of yellowish walrus humanoid with long whiskers. I have no idea why he looks like this in the comic. In the novelization he is vaguely described as an overweight, hairy being (possibly human) and in the scene that was filmed he was portrayed by Declan Mulholland as a clearly human character in a furry costume. This Marvel version of the character turns up later in the series too.
Biggs turns up again in issue 5 for his second deleted scene; the one that was actually put back in the movie in 1997. An interesting line that didn't get put back in (or even filmed for all I know) is 'Red Leader''s mentioning that he knew Luke's father and what a hot-shot pilot he was back in the day.

The artwork gets a bit on the psychedelic side in some panels and the death of Ben is surprisingly shocking.
One cool thing about the early comics is the letters pages. As the comic was released before the movie a lot readers hadn't seen it yet and there is a lot of speculation and hype about the movie's release. Also, many comparisons are made here between the comic and the novelization which readers seem to know inside out. Man, were people ready to see this movie!

This is the first bit of news relating to the recent Disney take-over of all things Star Wars that has got me excited. I was a bit skeptical at the prospect of the Mouse House running the show at first. The last thing Star Wars needs is more cutesy antics and goofy cartoon humor. To be honest I can live without a 'sequel trilogy'. I've always felt that Return of the Jedi brought things to a nice happy ending and never wanted to see too much of what happened next. The stand alone movies might be fun depending entirely on their subject matter. Clone Wars has officially been shut down at this point, although there has been a sneak peek at stuff already produced awaiting release. We may get a final season 6 or perhaps some feature length DTV followup. But that's not really relevant to this blog...

What is relevant is the recent announcement of an all new animated series called 'Star Wars: Rebels' which will be very much a return to the era of 'classic' Star Wars. From www.starwars.com: Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Presumably we will be back in the world of TIE Fighters, Stormtroopers, X Wings and all the other classic stuff that makes old school Star Wars fans like me giddy. Clone Wars director Dave Filioni is on board as executive producer. I don't know if that's any indication of the style of the animation we will be seeing, but I think it would be cool to see something that ties in with the existing TV series in terms of visuals. I'm also hoping for appearances from Vader and Tarkin.

As well as releasing the first 6 issues of the comic in 2 collections (plus a single collection of issues 1-6), Marvel also did this trade-paperback style anthology published by Del Rey in November 1977. It's much smaller than the comic books so the artwork is a little squashed in there and its all in black and white as you can see in the images below. It also included an intro by Stan Lee who manfully owns that he initially turned down the idea of a Star Wars comic thinking that the world didn't really need another 'ray-gun space opera', but quickly changed his mind upon seeing an early cut of the movie. Then there's Roy Thomas's preface where he details the difficult task of producing a comic book with only movie stills to go on and the frustration at seeing scenes such as the Biggs Darklighter one being cut from the movie.

Most people know the story behind this first ever Star Wars novel (besides the novelization) published in 1978, but here's the short version anyway. Alan Dean Foster (who ghost wrote Star Wars) was under contract to write a second novel which could be filmed as a low budget sequel should the movie not perform too well at the box office. This way 20th Century Fox could knock out a cheapie 'Star Wars 2' and recoup some of their losses on the first movie. Foster's story is set entirely on a fog-shrouded planet and contains no space battles. Also noticeably absent is Han Solo as Harrison Ford (unlike his co-stars) had not signed a 3-picture deal and would not have been likely to return for round 2 if the first film bombed. But of course Star Wars stormed the box office and Lucas was able to go ahead with his more ambitious and expensive sequel The Empire Strikes Back, relegating Splinter of the Mind's Eye to an odd existence as 'Star Wars 1.5'. Nevertheless, the book came out and became the first entry in the now gargantuan entity of 'Expanded Universe' novels that exists today.

It's fun to wonder what might have been. The book is very reminiscent of those low budget sword and sorcery flicks that were popular in the 80s; a hero and a princess gadding about a prehistoric location on some sort of quest, fending off rubbery swamp monsters and passing through shanty, underpopulated towns with some old timer handing out mystic advice. It could easily have been made into one of those kind of movies. The plot is simple; Luke and Leia (along with Artoo and Threepio) are en route to a secret meeting of rebel factions but crash land on a swampy planet called Mimban. There they discover a secret imperial mining operation and pose as miners to enter the town. Falling in with an old crone called Halla (who appears to have some minor control of the force) they learn of the Kaiburr crystal, a gemstone that magnifies the power of the force-user who wields it. They get into trouble with the local administrator, Grammel, and are thrown into a prison cell from which they promptly escape with the aid of two 'Yuzzems' (large hairy creatures not unlike Wookiees). What follows is a fairly routine planetary adventure across swamplands in a stolen imperial 'crawler', a fight with a giant worm, a descent into the subterranean caves and an encounter with the primitive race who dwell there. It is at this point that Vader shows up, also keen to get his hands on the crystal and it soon becomes a race against time to get to the forgotten jungle temple before he does.

Being an early entry in the Star Wars canon, there are the occasional, inevitable inconsistencies. The budding romance or (dare I say it?) sexual tension between Luke and Leia may make a few readers cringe today now knowing that the pair are brother and sister and is perhaps the most irrefutable piece of evidence in the age old argument that Lucas was making this stuff up as he went along. Vader's saber is described as blue at one point (no doubt due to the paleness of the blades in the original cut of the movie) but that's nothing compared to the howler Foster makes when he has Vader accuse Luke of shooting down his TIE Fighter over the Death Star. Surely somebody must had picked up on that before the book went to print?

It's an ok read and like a lot of this early stuff, it seems a bit obsolete in the shadow of what Star Wars has now become. But as with all things on this blog, it's the context of its time period that make it important. 'The Further Adventures of Luke Skywalker' must have been an irresistible tug on the young Star Wars fan in a time when there was just one movie and a handful of Marvel comic books to go on.

I know I've done a lot of magazines lately, but there's just so damn many of them from this era and they really give a glimpse into the times which is why I love them. Issue #14 of the cracking sci-fi magazine 'Starlog' featured another Star Wars article as its cover story; this time the work of matte painter P. S. Ellenshaw. The issue also included info on upcoming sci-fi flicks like Superman (1978) Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979) as well as TV series like Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles and 'Galactica' (Battlestar Galactica).

Another Star Wars related article was this one calling for readers to vote which sci-fi movie soundtracks they wanted to be released. It's interesting to see how influential the 2-record release of John Williams' score was on the release of film music records. These days just about every film gets a soundtrack release but before Star Wars the availability of sci-fi movies in particular seemed very limited.

And fans of old school Star Wars need to see this.

This 2min animation by somebody called Otaking77077 has popped up on Youtube and AICN among other places and is utterly fantastic. I don't know if this is part of some bigger plan but the general consensus is that fans would much rather see more of this sort of thing rather than yet more seasons of Clone Wars.
